"INTERNATIONAL" HISTORY

The Clans vs Counties Contest takes inspiration from the "international" cross border contests of 1904-1908, organised by the then Scottish Amateur Brass Band Association and Durham and Northumberland Association.

Eight bands (four per section) from each Association were chosen as representatives, with contests taking place twice a year at alternating venues across the border.

"A keen Scotland versus England competition in Brass Band Music was in order. There was no prize money, no medals for soloists; simply a dead earnest fight for all the honour." (West Lothian Courier)

Bands including Polton Mills, Bo'ness, Heworth and Cockerton with such names as William Rimmer and John Gladney, adjudicated Alexander Owen and Shipley Douglas, battled it out performing set and own choice test pieces to claim the coveted International Challenge Cup.
